Continuing with failure of the hierarchy, our U.S. bishops are failing the faithful, and they don't care who gets hurt.

In the wake of the Supreme Court decision to destroy Roe, Fr. Richard Heilman used his homily over the weekend to slam the U.S. bishops. He began by reading a passage from the Gospel of John, chapter 10 — a parable from Jesus about hireling shepherds and Christ the good shepherd.

Fr. Richard Heilman, St. Mary of Pine Bluff Catholic Church: "We are in the place we are right now because our shepherds are no shepherds at all. They're hired men. It's a job. They could care less [sic] about their flock, as they hide away when the wolf comes."

Faithful Catholics are not blind to the fact our country is sinking into corruption and sin, but, according to Fr. Heilman, our bishops aren't eager to do anything.

Fr. Heilman: "When we're told that, 'Go ahead and tear your baby apart limb from limb; go ahead and marry your cocker spaniel; go ahead and treat others like cattle,' because you know why, it might be political if we speak up — are you kidding me?"

Not only do the bishops do nothing, but they silence and cancel faithful members of their flock who dare to speak up. Even — or especially — priests.

Fr. Heilman: "Priests are getting canceled or brought into the bishop's office: 'You hide like every other hired-hand priest out there, and you say nothing because you might upset the wolves.'"

Fr. Heilman's message is not only a wake-up call to the bishops, but a rallying cry for the laity. He finished his homily with a message to all spiritual leaders, saying, "Stop being a hired hand and be the shepherd you're called to be."
