But to read the latest issue of “La Civiltà Cattolica,” the question of women priests appears to be anything but closed. On the contrary, wide open.

“La Civiltà Cattolica” is not just any magazine. By statute, every line of it is printed after inspection by the Holy See. But in addition there is the very close confidential relationship between Jorge Mario Bergoglio and the magazine’s editor, the Jesuit Antonio Spadaro.

Who in turn has his most trusted colleague in deputy editor Giancarlo Pani, he too a Jesuit like all the writers of the magazine.

So then, in the article with his byline that appears in the latest issue of “La Civiltà Cattolica,” Fr. Pani calmly rips to shreds the “last clear word” - meaning the flat no - that John Paul II spoke against women’s priesthood.

To see how, all it takes is to reread this passage of the article, properly speaking dedicated to the question of women deacons, but taking the cue from there to express hopes for women priests as well.

E la regola è lo strettissimo legame tra il papa e la rivista.

È il legame che lo stesso Francesco ha confermato e rafforzato nel discorso che ha rivolto giovedì 9 febbraio al collegio degli scrittori de "La Civiltà Cattolica", ricevuti in Vaticano in occasione dell'uscita del numero 4000 della rivista:

"Io nel mio lavoro vi vedo, vi seguo, vi accompagno con affetto. La vostra rivista è spesso sulla mia scrivania. E so che voi nel vostro lavoro non mi perdete mai di vista. Avete accompagnato fedelmente tutti i passaggi fondamentali del mio pontificato, la pubblicazione delle encicliche e delle esortazioni apostoliche, dando di esse una interpretazione fedele".

Dal che si ricava, ad esempio, che il via libera alla comunione ai divorziati risposati, dato da "La Civiltà  Cattolica" prima ancora che uscisse l'esortazione postsinodale "Amoris laetitia", era ed è "una interpretazione fedele" del pensiero del papa:

Nello stesso discorso del 9 febbraio Francesco ha inoltre detto che "già da molto tempo la segreteria di Stato invia 'La Civiltà Cattolica' a tutte le nunziature nel mondo" e si è felicitato per le nascenti edizioni mensili della rivista anche in spagnolo, inglese, francese e coreano. Un modo in più per fare arrivare ovunque, e con autorità, il proprio pensiero.

To understand the importance of this magazine, "La Civiltà Cattolica", something like "The Catholic Civilization", one should know that they are all Jesuit writers, and their articles are revised and corrected by the Vatican Secretariat of State before publication. 

The pope has met with its authors to celebrate its 4,000th issue, and the launch of its editions in Spanish, English, French, and Korean.

It was an important meeting because Pope Francis has publicly stated that "La Civiltà Cattolica" gives a faithful interpretation of the documents of his Magisterium.

The pope has asked them to make a Catholic magazine, not a magazine that defends Catholic ideas.
