Anti-Pope Francis is Driving the Gay Agenda

The Magisterium of the Church teaches us that the elevation to the papacy of a heretic, a woman or a child is invalid and null. The existence of Bergoglio's active participation in the Saint Gallen mafia, his apostasy in Argentina, where he was a notorious and contumacious formal heretic, shows us that Bergoglio has never been a legitimate Pope of the Catholic Church.

New Evidence: Francis Knew About Abusive Priest, Kept Him on

by Church Militant  •  ChurchMilitant.com  •  February 25, 2019

Pope Francis was shown sexually explicit photos of Bp. Zanchetta in 2015

An Argentine newspaper, El Tribuno, the first to break the Zanchetta case, published documents [Feb. 21] that show how bishops, the Cardinal Primate of Argentina, the Nuncio, the Vatican and the Pope personally since 2015 have been aware of the case of the bishop on whom today hangs a heavy accusation of abuse. The case in recent days has arrived in court, with the criminal complaint brought by victims of the former bishop of Oran. From the photographs of a 2016 report, signed by five priests, including three former diocesan vicars, it is clear that Gustavo Zanchetta was accused not only of having obscene homosexual sex on his cell phone, but of harassment of seminarians, of not having registered the sale of an important property of the diocese and of poor management of both finances and personnel in Oran.
From the report, which El Tribuno came into possession of (read the full article with the document signed by five religious), and from which it published the photos, it is clear that the diocese discovered at random photos of Zanchetta and other nudes, and in very explicit poses. The chancellor saw those photos while he was downloading onto a computer some institutional images from Zanchetta's cell phone, at his request. And from there he notified the authorities, primarily the Vicar General, and immediately after, Abp. Marcelo Colombo, the archbishop of Salta Mario Cargnello, the Primate Cardinal Poli, archbishop of Buenos Aires, the nunciature and the pontiff. In October 2015, Gustavo Zanchetta was urgently summoned to Rome; and everyone in the diocese assumed it was related to the Synod on the Family, given the close relations that linked him to Jorge Mario Bergoglio ever since the latter was cardinal and President of the Argentine Episcopal Conference. Zanchetta returned to Oran without anything happening: It's unknown what was said to the Pope, but some say that the bishop claimed the photos were rigged.
The chancellor saw those photos while he was downloading onto a computer some institutional images from Zanchetta's cell phone.Tweet
In 2016, as evidenced by the photographs of El Tribuno, three of his vicar generals and two monsignors presented a formal internal complaint to the nunciature, insisting on "strange behavior" of Zanchetta with the seminarians. He met them without the presence of the Rector, spent a night in their rooms with a flashlight, asked to massage them, went to their rooms at the time they had to get up, sat on their beds, encouraged them to drink alcohol and showed a certain preference for those who were "a little more graceful."
Not even this complaint had visible repercussions. Another followed, in 2017, when alleged cases of sexual abuse against seminarians began to emerge.

Zanchetta had to leave the diocese, but no ecclesiastical investigation followed, nor was he reported to law enforcement. Rather, Zanchetta landed in the Vatican, where the Pontiff created a role for him, until then nonexistent, assessor to the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See. Thus he became second-in-command of the Vatican treasury, and took up residence in Casa Santa Marta, where the Pontiff is living.
In the city of San Ramon of the New Oran, on the 20th of April 2016 at 12, the Vicars General meet, Monsignor Gabriel Acevedo and Juan José Manzano, the Rector of the seminary of St. John XXIII, Fr. Martin Alarcon, Mons. Diego Pietro Calvisi, and Mgr. Andrés Buttu, to comply with the request of his Most Reverend Excellency Msgr. Paul Emile Tscherrig, Apostolic Nuncio of his Holiness in Argentina.
Thus begins the internal relationship of the five religious.
The document, written at the request of the Pope's representative in the country, Emile Tscherrig (seen in the photo of the signatures), is proof that the Vatican has known of accusations against Gustavo Zanchetta since 2016. But in statements by Alessandro Gisotti, spokesman for the Holy See Press Office, behind the high walls the "Zanchetta case" was known to them only a few months ago .

Final page of letter regarding Zanchetta signed by five religious

In the report, the five religious with senior officials say that on "Sept. 22, 2015," the secretary chancellor of the diocese, Luis Diaz, told them they had found "selfies" by Zanchetta on his cell phone, "naked and masturbating." He discovered these images by chance, when the ex-bishop asked him to download some photos of institutional activities, and they appeared as if sent by his cell phone. He also said he had found pornographic material that had been sent to him, and that it had not been erased from the phone's memory.

With these elements, the religious say they communicated with the former bishop of Oran, Marcelo Colombo, who sent them to the archbishop of Salta Mario Cargnello. "Noting the gravity of the situation, with Bp. Zanchetta, the Pope's personal friend, he decided (Cargnello, ed.) to get in touch with the Cardinal Primate of Argentina, Monsignor Mario Poli, and asked Father Gabriel to call the Nunciature to warn him that what was in the hands of the cardinal contained confidential information of a very serious nature on the Bishop of Oran," the letter states.
In October 2015, the then-bishop was summoned by the Pope. "We note that in no way are they photoshopped, as the bishop said on his return from Rome, because everything you see in the pictures — the sheets, and closet — are those of his room."
Diaz, who discovered Zanchetta's controversial selfies, in a signed and sealed letter also note that they were not faked. In that document, which was part of the first complaint, the former bishop thought he had the support of Pope Francis. According to Diaz, Zanchetta told him that in Rome they showed him [the pope] the photos but that "he did not care about this because he had strong shoulders to carry that weight and get away with it."
Diaz, who discovered Zanchetta's controversial selfies, in a signed and sealed letter also note that they were not faked.Tweet
As reported by his then-secretary, the former bishop told him that "fortunately the images did not pass through the Nunciature, but went directly to Rome, where he had the personal support of Pope Francis and the Cardinal Primate," Mario Poli.
A second complaint, in 2017, was apparently accompanied by letters from seminarians. El Tribuno writes that Zanchetta would present himself again to his "spiritual father," Pope Francis: "He tells him, yes, Father, I am ill and I need treatment, I offer my resignation. The Pope tells him: We'll cure you, and it seems to me that you cannot govern anything. He went and resigned."
A month later he created the post for him of assessor for APSA [Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See]. Now Zanchetta — who a few days ago was in audience with the Pontiff — has been suspended from office, and the criminal complaint opens up new problematic scenarios from a diplomatic point of view.

Francis covered up for Zanchetta who had gay porn on his phone, Vatican journalist says

Inés San Martin asked how we can believe there will be no more cover-ups when the Pope 'covered up for someone in Argentina who had gay porn involving minors'

A prominent Vatican journalist has accused Pope Francis of covering up for an Argentine bishop who had gay porn on his phone involving minors.

Inés San Martin, who is one of the most respected journalists in the Vatican press corps, asked Archbishop Charles Scicluna at a press conference after the abuse summit: “We know there is a bishop in Argentina, Zanchetta, who had gay porn on his phone involving young people.

“How can we believe that this is in fact the last time we’re going to hear ‘no more cover-ups’ when at the end of the day, Pope Francis covered up for someone in Argentina who had gay porn involving minors?

“How can we believe that this is going to change now?”

— Catholic Sat (@CatholicSat) February 24, 2019

Archbishop Scicluna appeared to be taken aback by the question, responding: “Well I’ll quote what the Holy Father said this morning about the law. About the case, I’m not, I’m not, you know, I’m not authorised… I mean, yeah.”

Vatican interim press office director Alessandro Gisotti then cut off Archbishop Scicluna’s response, saying that questions about specific cases were not permitted.

San Martin was referring to the case of Gustavo Zanchetta, which was first reported by AP and Argentine newspaper El Tribuno in January. Zanchetta was named Bishop of Orán by Pope Francis in 2013, before suddenly retiring in 2017, ostensibly on health grounds. The Pope then appointed him to a senior Vatican role just months later.

However, Zanchetta’s former vicar general revealed last month that the bishop faced numerous accusations abuse against seminarians, and of having gay pornography and ‘naked selfies’ on his phone. He added that the Vatican had known of the allegations as early as 2015.

El Tribuno published further documents last Thursday suggesting Pope Francis knew of the allegations. The documents, written in 2016 by a diocesan secretary and sent to the nunciature, various high ranking prelates in the Argentine church and the Pope himself, includes complaints about Zanchetta’s “strange behaviour”.

Signed by three vicars general and two monsignors, the documents say Zanchetta would meet seminarians without the rector of the seminary being present. He would also spend the night in their accommodation, ask them to give him massages, encouraged them to drink alcohol.

The diocesan secretary also says that he discovered obscene images of Zanchetta and other men while downloading content from Zanchetta’s phone to his PC, at Zanchetta’s request.

In January, the Vatican refused to confirm or deny receiving the evidence against Zanchetta.

The vicar general of Orán, however, told AP: “In 2015, we just sent a ‘digital support’ with selfie photos of [Zanchetta] in obscene or out of place behaviour that seemed inappropriate and dangerous.”

The Vatican has yet to comment on the latest documents.

Courageous Reporter asks Scicluna about Francis’ Cover-Up of Zanchetta Case

Inés San Martín questions “Abp.” Charles Scicluna on Feb. 24, 2019

Some light fireworks could be seen today at the final press conference wrapping up the sex abuse summit in the Vatican that had begun on Feb. 21.
As is customary, the press panel took questions from journalists in the audience after its presentations, and the last one came from Inés San Martín, who is the Rome Bureau Chief for the mainstream Novus Ordo news site Crux. Herself from Buenos Aires, Argentina, San Martin is for that reason somewhat connected to the current pretend-pope, but this did not keep her from asking the following explosive question, clearly embarrassing to Francis and to the other Vatican authorities. She addressed it to the “Archbishop” of Malta, Charles Scicluna:
[San Martin:] Archbishop Scicluna, you said that Pope Francis wants to raise the age for which the church considers porn involving minors to be a grave delict. We know that there’s a bishop in Argentina, [Gustavo] Zanchetta, who had gay porn in his phone involving young people. How can we believe that this is in fact, you know, the last time we’re going to hear, “No more cover-up!”, when at the end of the day, Pope Francis covered up for someone in Argentina who had gay porn involving minors… I mean, can we actually believe that this is going to change now?
What transpired then was priceless. As Scicluna fumbled, Francis’ spokesman, Alessandro Gisotti, quickly came to his aid, before a short while later the Maltese prelate returned to the microphone himself. Here is what they said:
[Scicluna:] Well, I’ll quote what the Holy Father said this morning about the law. About the case, I’m not… I’m not… you know… I’m not authori… I mean… yeah…. [is interrupted by Alessandro Gisotti].
[Gisotti:] If I can add something: You know exactly what my communication was. We have said that an investigation has been launched; it is ongoing. So we will inform you of the results once it has been completed. This is our position. This is all I can say at the moment. As you know, we had asked you not to focus on individual cases, and I think that, generally speaking, the meeting has provided an extraordinary answer also in this regard.
[Scicluna:] I don’t have information about the case you mentioned, but if it’s investigating [sic], someone is investigating a case, they’re not covering it up. That’s my take.
The awkward exchange can be seen in this video clip (1:08:22 – 1:10:02 min marks):

Scicluna’s body language certainly matches his verbal confusion. It is clear that this question was not supposed to come up, and Gisotti essentially reminded the daring journalist of exactly that.
For those who may need a refresher on what the Zanchetta case is about, the following post, published by us back in January, has details:
Last month, Vatican spokesman Gisotti issued two separate statements in which he claimed that when in late 2017 Francis appointed Zanchetta to a new Vatican position created specifically for him, these accusations against the Argentinian prelate had not yet come to light.
This, however, has been contradicted by none other than the diocesan vicar general at the time, “Fr.” Juan José Manzano, who has testified that the “Pope” did know about it but, so he thinks, gullibly fell for an excuse Zanchetta offered. What is more, just this past Thursday, the Argentinian newspaper El Tribuno published internal church documents that apparently confirm that Francis knew about the sexual abuse allegedly committed by Zanchetta before he brought him to the Vatican. Ines San Martin herself has reported on it, as has Marco Tosatti.
It’s interesting that Scicluna began to say he is not authorized to talk about this case, but then stopped himself, perhaps because it occurred to him that it wouldn’t look too good to say, “I can’t talk to you about it” when they’ve just concluded several days’ worth of talks, reflections, and what not on how important transparency and accountability are.
Scicluna’s assertion that there is no cover-up because there is (now) an investigation is disingenuous. If there was a cover-up by Francis, it was at the time of Zanchetta’s resignation and his subsequent transfer to the Vatican, that is, between August and December of 2017. The Vatican didn’t announce an investigation until Jan. 4, 2019, saying that accusations had not come to light until the fall of 2018.
In any case, wouldn’t it be one of the objects of the investigation to determine whether or not there had been a cover-up? If so, how can Scicluna say that the investigation is proof of the non-existence of a cover-up? And just what would Gisotti, Scicluna, and all the rest have us believe about this anyway? Are we to entertain the idea that upon concluding the investigation — which, by the way, is reportedly being led by a “very good friend” of the accused — they would possibly announce that, “Yes, Francis knew of the accusations, saw the evidence, but decided to cover it all up and quietly transferred Zanchetta to Rome in the hopes that no one would find out what an abusive, perverted dirtbag he is”?
Whatever the inquiry will officially find, it is obvious that it will not find that Francis is to blame in any meaningful way. And so San Martin’s question was neither premature nor uncalled-for, and it was quite a courageous act on her part because she might now have to face unpleasant consequences for her boldness.
By the way: In the past few days the news broke that an Argentine woman who had accused one of “Pope” Francis’ personal friends, the former politician Gustavo Vera, of child sex trafficking, was found dead near Buenos Aires. And yes, she had feared she would be killed and said so in a public tweet last year.

Ladies and gentlemen, more and more evidence is being amassed that there is a mountain of crimes to be uncovered, of which we have so far only scratched the surface.

The Anti-Pope Francis says he won't judge priests for being gay.

Disgruntled papal nuncios meet in secret in Rome

Church Militant has learned exclusively of a secret meeting that occurred with a good number of papal nuncios last night.
The point of the meeting was to air their grievances among each other at how the Vatican simply ignores whatever bad behavior of priests or bishops they report — meaning bad sexual behavior.
The nuncios, we were told — a somewhat sizable group of them who are here because of the sex summit — are extremely upset and angry and didn't really discover the scope of how the Vatican was ignoring their reports until they just started talking with each other informally.
That is quite a development. It's not exactly sure what recourse the various nuncios have, but that they are feeling dismissed, ignored and their reports trivialized is absolutely certain.
They are ticked off, frankly, and so are quite a few other people.
We've been told by various folks who work in and around the Vatican that things have never been this bad. Priests are afraid to wear cassocks, afraid that if they look "too traditional" they will be reported to the Vatican.
Various individuals are being followed and their movements monitored. Rooms are bugged, phone lines are tapped and the Vatican more and more resembles North Korea, as one cleric termed it to us.

This is the new Rome, the "Rome of Mercy" — mercy apparently for lying, covering up, homosexualist prelates who hate the Church, but no mercy for anyone else.

Sources tell us that the level of homosexual activity here is off the charts. The Swiss Guard, for example, is a regular target.

One source told us that grooming attempts and sexual advances by various archbishops are so off the charts that each year's new recruits should be given a week-long class on how to handle it.

And don't forget, this is the new Rome, the "Rome of Mercy" — mercy apparently for lying, covering up, homosexualist prelates who hate the Church, but no mercy for anyone else, especially those who uphold Tradition.
One of the more interesting developments to come out this week — speaking of homosexualist clergy who hate the Church — Fr. Thomas Rosica was busted plagiarizing multiple sources.
Yep, the Vatican's English-speaking liaison to the media simply ripped off lines from various sources in a speech he gave at Cambridge earlier this month.
But he didn't stop at just plagiarizing. He actually plagiarized out of context, using the moment to charge that the testimony of whistleblower Abp. Viganò was lies, which is rich considering he was passing off as his own words many other people's words in his speech.
In just one example, quoting out of context, he called Viganò's testimony a "diabolical masterpiece," a term first credited to a bishop and repeated by a cardinal referring to the crisis, not Viganò's testimony.
When caught red-handed, in typical unaccountable fashion, he apologized, accepted full responsibility and then turned around and blamed his interns.
And the tidbit about Abp. Viganò brings us back to the secret meeting of nuncios last night.
They are the keepers of many secrets, and if a group of them suddenly decided to do what former nuncio to the United States Viganò did last August, the Vatican could be in quite a mess.
As media scrutiny intensifies, it came up a couple of days ago that another papal inner circle member, Indian Cdl. Oswald Gracias, on two occasions himself left victims unprotected and did not go to the police, perhaps even breaking Indian law which mandates such action.
In one case, a family reported to him in 2015 that their son had come home from serving Mass and told them he had been raped by the priest.
Until real action is taken, Catholics are going to have to endure this sordid filth being exposed day by day.Tweet
They contacted him, and then Gracias simply left for Rome that same night and did not inform police. He found out sometime later from one of his auxiliaries that the family had ended up reporting it themselves.
Gracias also looked the other way when he was informed that one of his priests offering retreats for women had molested one woman, and Gracias just left him in service and did not report anything to the police.
It is example after example of this constant drip, drip, drip of offense and cover-up and ignoring that the laity, good priests and now apparently the nuncios are simply not going to stand for any longer.
To add insult to injury, Gracias is present here at the summit in so-called "listening sessions," hearing accounts of victims' suffering.
Which begs the question: If one of the Pope's inner circle can't listen and pay attention in his own diocese back home to these horrible things and follow the proper course of action, why is his sitting here in Rome going to make a difference?
The evil, the hypocrisy, the cover-up and the lies, the police state, the fear, the indignant attitude, the lack of good will — all of it is being laid bare case by horrible case.
Unfortunately, until real action is taken, Catholics are going to have to endure this sordid filth being exposed day by day.

Natacha Jaitt who accused Gustavo Vera of sex trafficking and Bergoglio of covering up pedophiles Found Dead : Family Suspects Murder

Argentine Whistleblower Found Dead: Family Suspects Murder

by Christine Niles, M.St. (Oxon.), J.D.  •  ChurchMilitant.com  •  February 23, 2019

Natacha Jaitt accused close friend of Pope Francis of sex trafficking

BUENOS AIRES (ChurchMilitant.com) - The mysterious death of a whistleblower in Argentina is prompting family members to demand an investigation into what they suspect to be murder.
Natacha Jaitt, a model and actress, had been working on outing what she claimed to be a pedophile sex ring among celebrities and elites. At 2 a.m. Saturday, her naked body was found on the bed of a room in the hotel Xanadu in Villa La Ñata in the town of Benavidez. Two men were questioned at the scene: 47-year-old Guillermo Riconi, owner of the Villa, and 48-year-old Raul Velaztiqui, a film producer and the one who placed the call to police on finding her body.
The autopsy report claimed the cause of death was "Heart-respiratory failure (multi-organ failure) that led to pulmonary edema." The autopsy also revealed traces of cocaine in her nasal passages.
According to Spanish magazine Clarìn:
A vehicle, cocaine, a fanny pack and a telephone were seized from the room. It was discovered that at least three more people were with the actress, who were captured by security cameras while fleeing the place, before police arrived. In the video recording you see them throwing a package into a ditch. It is suspected it contained some type of narcotics.
Jaitt's brother and attorney, however, insist she would never have used cocaine because of a medical condition she suffered. Both of them suspect foul play.
"[W]e understand that she may have been a victim of a crime, he [her brother] is afraid that she was the victim of a murder," said Alejandro Cipolla, Jaitt's attorney.
Regarding the autopsy, Cipolla did not participate, but insisted that it be recorded "from start to finish."
On Apr. 5, 2018, Jaitt tweeted: "I'm not going to kill myself, I'm not going to overdose or drown in a bathtub, I'm not going to shoot myself, so if any of this happens, IT WASN'T ME. Save this tweet."

Accusations Against Gustavo Vera

On Argentine daytime TV last year, Jaitt accused members of the soccer leagues of taking sexual advantage of poor, young males.
Referring to Newell's Old Boys, a sports club in Rosario, Santa Fe in Argentina, Jaitt said, "I reported that the kids from the pensions who had no money and were from small towns, kids who played in the minor leagues, were being asked for oral sex by Newell's Old Boys' kit man in exchange for cleats. He would ask for this from kids who had no money whatsoever."
Among those she accused was also Gustavo Vera, a longtime associate of Pope Francis, claiming he ran a sex trafficking ring using his anti-trafficking organization as a front group.
"Did you know that [Gustavo Vera] is a pedophile? That he is a trafficker?" Jaitt asked a panelist on the show. "Did you know that he gets brothels shut down and then he keeps them for himself illegally? Did you know that I carried out a study and that I have video records of prostitutes talking about it ... ?"

Jaitt claimed she had presented her evidence to law enforcement, and went on to detail how she investigated Vera.

"What did I do? Take video, do logistics and follow him for a year," she explained. "Prostitutes from the streets and unfortunately from apartments had to endure being raped and sexually abused for 200, 500 pesos ... in the power of Mr. Vera."

On being challenged by a panelist who is a friend of Vera, Jaitt shot back, "I can prove everything."

Vera is head of La Alameda, an organization that claims to fight sex trafficking in Argentina. He's a longtime associate of Pope Francis, their collaboration going back more than a decade. They first met in 2008, when Vera's organization was going through a difficult time.

"We needed protection," Vera told People Magazine in 2015, explaining that members of his organization were being assaulted in the streets by criminal groups they had denounced.

"We heard Archbishop Bergoglio give a homily on human trafficking and slavery and decided to approach him," he said.
"From that moment on, we worked together on the streets," Vera said. "And when there was a witness being intimidated by the perpetrators of the crimes, Jorge would make sure to be photographed with that witness to send a clear message: 'We are all standing with this person who has been so brave.'"
Bergoglio nicknamed Vera "God's Trotsky," and Vera made clear his gratitude for Bergoglio's protection: "I am pretty sure Lucas and I would have ended up floating down the river face down had we not had Jorge’s support and involvement in our neighborhood association."

Gustavo Vera (right) visiting Pope Francis
at Casa Santa Marta in 2015
After Bergoglio's elevation to the Holy See, he invited Vera to visit him at Casa Santa Marta, where the pope baptized the children of their mutual friend Lucas Schaerer.

In February 2015, Vera published a private email sent to him from the pontiff, who feared Argentina would soon be afflicted with many of the troubles experienced in Mexico.
Pope Francis still calls Vera once a week.
Grassi was found guilty in 2009 of two acts of aggravated assault of a minor, but was allowed to remain free while his appeals went through the court system. During that time he claimed the support of then-Cdl. Bergoglio, president of the bishops of Argentina, who commissioned a leading criminal defense lawyer, Marcelo Sancinetti, to put together a report to exonerate Grassi.

The report, 2,800 pages long, was slammed for its attempts to discredit the victims, Attorney Juan Pablo Gallego, who represented the plaintiffs, saying it was a "scandalous instance of lobbying and exerting pressure on the Court."

The court was unswayed by Bergoglio's attempts to defend Grassi, finding the priest guilty of sex abuse and sentencing him to 15 years in prison.
Judge Carlos Mahiques, among those who received the report, said it was "extremely partial," its goal being "to exert a subtle form of pressure on the judges" to rule in favor of Grassi.
In spite of Bergoglio's public role in commissioning the counter-study on Grassi's behalf, he denied having anything to do with it when questioned. A documentary published in 2018, titled "Sex Abuse in the Church: Code of Silence," revealed an exchange between the pontiff and a journalist asking about Grassi.
"Your Holiness! Your Holiness, in the Grassi case, did you try to influence Argentine justice?"
Pope Francis answered, "No."
"No? Then why did you commission a counter-inquiry?"
The pontiff replied, "I never did," before turning away.

Investigation Into Jaitt's Death

Jaitt had received multiple threats over the past year, and had recently accused two men of raping her. She was also set to appear in court on defamation charges leveled by Vera.
A major investigation is being launched into the cause of Jaitt's death, involving a special team called by the attorney general of San Isidro, Beatriz Molinelli. The team will include several prosecutors as well as the deputy attorney general of San Isidro and a judicial secretary.

Last September, Bergoglio profaned the sacraments of Marriage and Confession

This Lawless man profanes the sacraments and violates the laws of the Church.

“The sacrament of Matrimony, which symbolizes the union of Christ with the Church, will be thoroughly attacked and profaned. They will make it easy for all to live in sin, thus multiplying the birth of illegitimate children without the Church’s blessing.

Bergoglio absolve and "married" a Uruguayan couple in civil union in fifteen minutes of private audience.

ANALYSIS
September 24, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Pope Francis has done it again. During a private audience at Santa Marta in Rome, which preceded the general audience in St. Peter's Square last Wednesday, the Pope blessed a civilly married couple in a whirlwind ceremony including a general absolution for all those present. We all remember the (not so) spontaneous in-flight wedding of two crewmembers in the airplane flying Pope Francis over Chile last January. This time, the Uruguayan couple involved appears really to have been taken by surprise, and there is a complete video of the one and a half-minute event to prove it.

Noelia Franco and Omar Caballero were united in a civil marriage 24 years ago. Five daughters, two sons-in-law and one granddaughter later, they were hoping not so much to regularize this irregular situation as to obtain Pope Francis’ blessing.
This story commences with what they feel was the miraculous healing of their youngest daughter, Sara, 4 years old, who was in intensive care with respiratory distress. One of Noelia’s friends in Montevideo, Uruguay had brought back holy water from Rome, blessed by Pope Francis. The distraught mother poured a few drops of it on her daughter's forehead: Sara, she says, immediately took a turn for the better and was soon out of intensive care.
The news spread (Noelia started her career at 17 as a journalist and for the last 12 years, she’s been running a public relations company with her husband Omar). In April 2017, she decided to bring her little daughter to Rome in order to thank Pope Francis during a public audience. She also took holy water blessed by the Pope back to Montevideo. She started handing it out to friends in need – and obtained, so she says, a number of miracles, thanks to the Francis-blessed water.
At this point, the Franco-Caballeros decided they needed to go to Rome to tell the Pope about what was happening, to thank him and to ask for his blessing. Last July, Noelia Franco sent an email to Monsignor Fabian Pedacchio, Pope Francis’ private secretary who was before that, according to Henry Sire’s Dictator Pope, Cardinal Bergoglio’s eyes and ears in Rome. She asked for an invitation to the Pope's public audience on September 19th, adding a letter to Pope Francis himself that has been published by the Uruguayan press.
Its most important excerpts read as follows:
“Blessings kept coming, up to the point where all the people to whom I had given holy water I had brought back from the Vatican received a miracle: a journalist friend got pregnant (it was one of the last possibilities she had), the daughter of another journalist who had a congenital illness was healed, another journalist friend won her battle against cancer and today she is pregnant.
“We would like to thank you for all these blessings received from the moment you made us return to our faith in the church, and we want you to bless our marriage.
“This year, we celebrated the 24th year of our marriage, my husband and I. When we got married we had no money for wedding rings and even less for a party or for the white dress. We always had the idea that we would have to get married in church, but being able to see you with our family would be the greatest blessing that we could receive.
“In all, there will be four adults, two teenagers and two children.
“We don't want to ask too much, we’re just asking you for 30 seconds to say thank you; we shall be on a trip to Rome from the 13th to the 20th of September, we would like yourself and your team to accept to have this meeting with our family on the day that will fit you best, or during the Wednesday audience on September 19.
“May God bless you, Francis.”
The response came quickly, and it was a surprise: the Pope himself had fixed a meeting at the Casa Santa Marta on September 19th, three-quarters of an hour before the general audience.
The meeting itself lasted a quarter of an hour. That is a great deal more than the “30 seconds” the family had asked for, Noelia and Omar hoping only for a quick blessing, but even so it is still difficult to speak of a fully fledged marriage ceremony. The father, the mother, three of their daughters, two sons-in-law and one granddaughter had a relaxed talk with the Pope. Family pictures were shown, photos were taken, they talked and joked. Pope Francis gave them his advice on having a lasting wedding.
“With you, bread and onions”, he said. It's a Spanish expression that harks back to ancient Egypt when bread and onions were staple food for the poor who couldn’t afford much else. It means staying together even during the hard times.
The whole group sat around a low table in armchairs and they were still all sitting there when the Pope decided it was time for a collective absolution. He spoke about some of the sins they could have committed, and of the “hitches that there had certainly been in their marriage”. He added that this was also the time to thank God for His grace that had “kept this family so united” and also for “so many fruits” it had given: “It is truly a great grace.” The grace of the sacramental union? Hardly… Then he blessed them all, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, saying that he absolved them “of all their sins”.
Collective or general absolutions in the Catholic Church are normally strictly reserved for emergency situations, such as an impending disaster or the moments before a battle when a military chaplain has no time to hear individual confessions. Much abuse has been recorded during the decades following Vatican II, with priests organizing penitential celebrations with collective absolution and no individual confessing of sins. The Congregation of the Doctrine of the faith published pastoral norms as early as 1972 which make all this clear. Among others, when circumstances allow, penitents should at least say an act of contrition, and when grave sins are involved, survivors should confess them individually within a year.
The video of the Pope’s general absolution does not show any of this. Perhaps because that part was not filmed – but it does not seem likely. It all sounds more like a friendly conversation where a sacramental absolution suddenly appears out of the blue. This raises the question: is living together as man and wife in a civil, non-sacramental marriage on the part of Catholics still a mortal sin, or not? Pope Francis appears to point to an answer which is a departure from Catholic teaching and tradition when he opined in June 2016: “I’ve seen a lot of fidelity in these cohabitations, and I am sure that this is a real marriage, they have the grace of a real marriage because of their fidelity.”
Seconds later, Pope Francis asked the couple to hold hands, posing the question: “Do you want to stay together?”  The video then shows Noelia turning to Omar: “Are you sure?”, she said. “Of course”, he replied. The Pope then looked inquiringly at Noelia, who said: “Yeees…” He blessed them again without words, before asking God to “keep them always together” and to give them “the grace of having many grandchildren”. And that was it.
Noelia, visibly surprised and moved, observed: “There we are, we’re married.”
The same day, she would post the video on twitter with these words: “Then one day… the Pope who speaks your language marries you in private under the eyes of your children. I have no words, 15 minutes of private audience with @Pontifex_es at Saint-Marta where our dream of marrying in church and having our marriage blessed.”
According to the Uruguayan daily El Pais, Noelia Franco told their reporter she was “in tears” during the ceremony. She recounted more details.
“Then Francis entered. He greets us, we start making jokes and telling anecdotes. He asked us whether we wanted to stay together and whether we wanted to get married and that after the Vatican would send the certificates. Our sons-in-law acted as witnesses and we got married,” she said.
The Uruguayan news-site Telenoche says Noelia Franco is a Catholic. It is not clear whether Omar Caballero is also a Catholic (that is the whole point of having engaged couples produce their baptism certificates before obtaining a church wedding, and doing other sorts of paperwork to check identities, make sure there was no previous sacramental marriage and so forth), nor does anyone seem to know or even care whether their five daughters were baptized.
The question is not whether Caballero and Franco are sincere in their desire for marriage and their commitment to remain faithful to each other as long as they both live (although that question was not put to them). The critical issue is the banalization of the sacrament of penance and of that of marriage, which here appears to be devalued to the point of being an on the spot blessing that simply completes a lasting civil union.
