In a homily on 4 July, Cardinal Carlos Castillo of Lima, Peru, said that he had received the Pope's ratification as Archbishop of Lima for five years, at least until he turns 80.

Below, there is a short list of his scandals.

He is one of the most notorious anti-Catholic prelates in South America and the direct opposite of his predecessor, Cardinal Cipriani Thorne, 81, (Opus Dei). The latter was immediately retired after turning 75 in 2019.

According to InfoVaticana.com, Castillo had links to the Revolutionary Communist Party in Peru. In 2019, De la Cigoña wrote that Castillo was 'much worse' than the soft-porn author Cardinal Tucho Fernández.

In September 2019, he led a Pachamama-Eucharist in his Cathedral, starting with this hymn: "Mother Earth, Pachamama, we've come to sing to you".

In January 2020, Cardinal Castillo said that "no one converts in front of the tabernacle".

Refuses Communion In the Mouth

On Corpus Christi in 2020, during the Covid hysteria, Cardinal Castillo filled the empty Cathedral with 5,000 photos of people who allegedly died from or with the coronavirus. Living people were not allowed in.

Cardinal Castillo has refused repeatedly to spend the Communion into the mouth. At a livestreamed Eucharist in the Cathedral in August 2021, he twice told young kneeling Catholics: "¡En la mano!" [In the hand“].

Also in August 2021, he proposed to introduce lay persons as "pastors" or heads of parishes, as is already done in Europe.

In December 2021, Cardinal Castillo claimed that Jesus Christ "died as a murdered layman" and "did not offer a sacrifice".

Defense of Homosexual Mockery of Our Lady

                            

In 2025, Castillo defended the blasphemious play 'María Maricón' at the Catholic university. Maricón' means 'fag' in Spanish.

While Catholics prayed the rosary against the play and the Cardinal, he defended the blasphemy: “No one has wanted to destroy the image of the Virgin.”

Conservative Moment is "Fascist"

Cardinal Castillo was an ally with Bishop Robert Prevost in fighting the recently dissolved ‘Sodalitium Christianae Vitae’.

In October 2024, Cardinal Castillo called for the suppression of the Sodalitium calling it of “fascist religiosity”.

The Sodalitium Christianae Vitae was a conservative Catholic movement founded in Lima in 1971, however by a homosexual abuser with a homosexual subculture.

Financial and Administrative Mismanagement

Around 20 priests in Lima Archdiocese are left without pastoral assignments despite not having had any canonical penalties imposed on them. Castillo simply considers them 'too' Catholic or too close to Cardinal Cipriani, his predecessor.

When Castillo arrived, the archdiocese had around 50 employees; now, there are over 200. Nobody knows what they are doing.

There are 13 parish schools in the diocese. Previously, a school principal would earn around 700 or 800 dollars a month. Now, however, Castillo has appointed his own people, who earn more than 4,000 dollars a month, while the schools are full of gender propaganda.

Some schools in poor areas used to provide free meals for children. Now, this has stopped.

When Cardinal Cipriani left, the diocesan accounts were in excellent shape. Now, people are wondering where the money is going.

A university against the Catholic faith

The Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, under Castillo's wing, is described as "the think tank of the Peruvian progressive left." For years, it has held homosexuality weeks, workshops on abortion with misoprostol, and "diversity" seminars, and teaches doctrines openly contrary to the faith: denial of hell and transubstantiation, relativization of abortion, and mockery of Church dogmas.

According to Infovaticana, a trustworthy source,  Carlos Castillo also was a member of the Revolutionary Communist Party and had ties to the Shining Path. 

Another aspect of the context that matches the said piece of information is that the founder of the Communist Party: Shining Path, Abimael Guzmán, extended his network of influence to the University of Saint Marcos in 1973, right when Castillo Mattasoglio was there as a sociology student. At this very time Castillo joined the National Union of Catholic Students, where he met Gustavo Gutiérrez and established with him a lasting friendship, according to the Peruvian newspaper La República.

A couple of words about Gutiérrez would be appropriate, I think. The myth exists that he corrected his doctrine in the light of the condemnation of the Marxist theology of liberation by the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith. But this is not right. When one reads the 1972 edition of the book Theology of Liberation and compares it to the 1990 edition, one finds that there is no substantial change at all. And in 2006 and 2008, Gutiérrez states that he does not regret one word of anything he wrote in the first edition of Theology of Liberation. Well, in both editions, Gutiérrez basically claims that the Church must be used for ends that are alien to her and that Marxists should become clerics in order to achieve this: In the past the church used the world for its own ends; today, many Christians — and non Christians — are asking themselves if they should, for example, use the social weight of the church in order to accelerate the process of transformation of the social structures.

Luciano Revoredo is a Peruvian Catholic journalist that is very concerned with the turn taken by the Peruvian Church since the visit of Pope Francis in 2018. According to him, currently the Church in Peru is led chiefly by three prelates whose Marxist inclination is well-known: “Monsignor Miguel Cabrejos, President of the Peruvian Conference of Bishops and Archbishop of Trujillo; Monsignor Pedro

Castillo’s actions and teachings as Archbishop of Lima confirm the profile given by Gustavo Gutiérrez of the revolutionary cleric. Indeed, (1) Archbishop Castillo urged Peru to accept the results of the last presidential elections, although they were evidently fraudulent and brought to power a hard-line Marxist revolutionary.
