Spain conquered souls for Christ: From idolaters to devoted children of the Church

Pope Pius XII
Transformed from idolatrous peoples into devout children of the Spouse of Christ
The pride of this faith exalts your name and makes sacred many pages of your history; this faith elevated over the vestiges of the pre-Colombian civilization, and over the savage solitudes, and even beyond the steep peaks of your mountains, the missionary spirit which, regenerating them in union with Rome, transformed those idolatrous peoples into devout children of the Spouse of Christ. (Pius XII. Radio Message for the 2nd National Eucharist Congress of Peru, January 27, 1940)

Spanish evangelization freed the indigenous people from the barbarity of paganism, cannibalism, and perverted sexuality, bringing them the salvation of their souls.

Pope Pius X on the evangelization of the Americas:
  • Your nations have remained faithful to their faith and traditions

I congratulate you and all of the Bishops of Spanish America, because your nations […] have remained faithful to their faith and traditions. With this act of fidelity, which today you manifest toward Spain, you show your recognition of the debt of gratitude that you owe it, and that you praise; because unlike other peoples who, being favored by God, have nonetheless turned their backs to the Vicar of Christ, showing themselves to be extremely ungrateful, Spain, despite all difficulties, has always remained faithful to the Catholic, Apostolic and Roman religion, and, will surely remain so in the future. (Pius X. Allocution, November 22, 1908)

Pope Leo XIII

  • Hundreds of thousands were reborn to eternal life, since Columbus willed intensely to propagate the Gospel to new lands

From the midst of the unexplored ocean, thanks to him [Christopher Columbus], arose a new world: hundreds of thousands of creatures, who were forgotten and in darkness have been reintroduced into the human family, from barbarism they were led to meekness and civilization: and, what is more important, from lost that thery were, they have been reborn to eternal life through the communication of the benefits that Jesus Christ brought forth. […] In effect, it is clear that he understood and willed this intensely: to open the way of the Gospel to new lands and new seas. (Leo XIII. Encyclical Quarto Abeunte Saeculo, June 16, 1892)

  • The principles of the Catholic religion were carried by the ships of Columbus

Keeping this thought constantly in view, his first solicitude, wherever he disembarked, was to plant upon the shore the sacred emblem of the cross. Wherefore, like as the Ark of Noah, surmounting the overflowing waters, bore the seed of Israel together with the remnants of the human race, even thus did the barks launched by Columbus upon the ocean carry into regions beyond the seas as well the germs of mighty States as the principles of the Catholic religion. (Leo XIII. Encyclical Longinqua Oceani, On Catholicism in the United States, January 6, 1895)

Our Lady of the Pillar, destroyer of Paganism, Queen of Evangelization, and patron saint of Hispanic heritage.

The Virgin promised the Apostle Saint James victory over paganism, to help him in his mission of Evangelization.

Saint James the Moor-slayer

In 1630, King Philip IV and Pope Urban VIII officially decreed that the Apostle Saint James the Greater be considered the sole and only Patron Saint of Spain.
The invocation to the Apostle Saint James before entering into battle with the expression: "Santiago and close Spain!" has been the hallmark of the Reconquista.
Tradition tells us that the Apostle Saint James appeared mounted on a white horse during the Battle of Clavijo, fighting alongside the Christians against the Moors.
The Blessed Virgin told Saint Anthony Mary Claret in the 19th century: "The salvation of Spain is enshrined in the Holy Rosary."
