The Deception of "The spirit of Assisi"

Without Christ, There Is No Peace: The False Peace of Religious Indifferentism vs. the Reign of Christ

Unity Among the Wicked

The promotion of a secular, interfaith unity is represented in statements such as:

"We need to cultivate the spirit of Assisi. Peace must once again become the common ideal of all people." — Robert Prevost

Words like these do not reflect the care of a true shepherd concerned with the eternal salvation of souls. Instead, they echo the sentiments of an earthly, secular ruler. As foretold in Sacred Scripture:

"With flattery, he will cause those who act wickedly against the covenant to apostatize." (Daniel 11:32)

The Abandonment of Apostolic Duty and the First Commandment

A true shepherd’s mandate is clear: to call idolaters, non-Christians, and those who reject Christ as Redeemer to conversion, and to call heretics to repentance through the grace of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Instead, invoking the anti-Catholic "spirit of Assisi" encourages non-Christians to pray to false gods while rejecting the True God. This trade-off yields only a deceptive, secular peace that defies the First Commandment, offends the Most Holy Trinity, and opposes the Kingship of Christ in both individual souls and society. Furthermore, attempting to legitimize false clerical figures mocks Christ's priesthood and His work of redemption.

Prevost to heretics: ‘We are already one!’

The Inefficacy of Non-Christian Worship: What Catholic Tradition Teaches

Invocations addressed to false gods and the prayers of those in obstinate rejection of Christ’s laws are not pleasing to God. Catholic tradition and magisterial teaching consistently affirm that true worship requires the Spirit of Christ and sanctifying grace:

  • Council of Vienne (1311–1312): Explicitly forbade the public invocation of sacrilegious non-Christian names, declaring that such practices displease the Divine Majesty.

  • Council of Vienne (Ecumenical XV)

    – The public invocation of the sacrilegious name of Mahomet is expressly forbidden – it displeases the divine majesty
  • Pope Pius XI: Affirmed that the Catholic Church alone preserves true worship (Quas Primas).

  • Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: Clarified that non-Christian rituals constitute an obstacle to salvation.

  • Catechism of the Council of Trent: Taught that praying in spirit is peculiar to Christians and not practiced by unbelievers.

  • Catechism of the Catholic Church: Notes that those who do not act according to the Spirit of Christ cannot truly pray in His Name.

  • Saint Thomas Aquinas: Reminded us that prayer without sanctifying grace lacks merit.

Severe Scriptural Warnings: The Exclusion of Idolaters from the Kingdom

Sacred Scripture is explicit regarding the spiritual consequences of violating the First Commandment and compromising divine truth. The Apostle Paul and Saint John the Evangelist leave no doubt that embracing false gods, persistent immorality, and religious deceit sever a soul from eternal salvation:

"Do you not know that the unjust shall not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall possess the kingdom of God."

— 1 Corinthians 6:9–10

"Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices deceit."

— Revelation 22:15

By inviting or encouraging non-Christians to persevere in their idolatrous rites under the guise of an interfaith "peace," religious indifferentism deceives souls into remaining outside the Kingdom of God. True pastoral charity requires warning men of these dangers and directing them to the only fountain of grace and truth: Jesus Christ.

The Prophet of Apostasy and the Usurpation of Truth

Father E. Sylvester Berry argued in his commentary on Revelation 12 and 13 that the false prophet of Antichrist would seek to usurp the Chair of Peter. Removing the true witness of the papacy leads directly to widespread heresy, schism, and false worship within churches.

As noted in Apocalyptic prophecy, all errors that afflict the Church—including paganism, rationalism, atheism, and false religions—are marshaled together to oppose the universal reign of Christ.

“With the beast of Antichrist only the horns have diadems as symbols of royalty or governing power. The heads are branded with names of blasphemy. (Apocalypse, 13:1) Hence they symbolize the sins and errors that will afflict the Church . . . in this final struggle to prevent the universal reign of Christ all forms of sin and error will be marshaled against the Church . . . all errors which have afflicted the Church may be summed up in these seven: Judaism, paganism, Arianism, Mohammedanism, Protestantism, rationalism, and atheism.

The True Path: Restoring the Social Reign of Our Lord

True and lasting peace cannot exist without Jesus Christ. As Pope Pius XI emphasized in Quas Primas (1925) and Divini Redemptoris (1937), the moral and social crises of society stem directly from the rejection of His divine rule:

"When once men recognize, both in private and in public life, that Christ is King, society will at last receive the great blessings of real liberty, well-ordered discipline, peace and harmony." — Pope Pius XI

Sacred Scripture confirms this truth across the books of the New Testament:

  • Matthew 18:20: "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

  • Acts 17:30–31: "God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, but now he commands people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world with justice..."

  • Mark 16:16: "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned."

  • 1 Corinthians 16:22: "If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. O Lord, come!"

The Apostolic Warning Against a False Gospel

The promotion of a deceptive, interfaith unity and a secular peace that compromises divine truth is not harmless—it places immortal souls in grave spiritual peril. Saint Paul leaves no room for ambiguity regarding those who twist Christ's message or preach a counterfeit gospel to appease the world. He delivers an absolute and terrifying divine warning in his letter to the Galatians:

"As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed." — Galatians 1:9

Matthew 25:30 As for this worthless servant, cast him outside into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

No matter who promotes these errors—whether a worldly ruler, a false shepherd, or even an angel from heaven—those who lead the faithful astray with false doctrines and syncretic compromises fall directly under the condemnation and curse of Almighty God. True charity consists not in flattering men into their own perdition through religious indifferentism, but in calling all nations to repentance, to the embrace of the one true faith, and to the eternal kingship of Jesus Christ.

 Philippians 2:10-11

That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth:

And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.
